Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Germanic National Museum) in Nuremberg

With about 1.3 million objects in its possession, the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg (Nuremberg vacation rentals | Nuremberg travel guide) is one of the largest cultural history museums in Germany. It houses one of the foremost collections on German culture and art from pre—/early history through to the present day.
The museum was founded in 1852 by the Franconian aristocrat Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufsess (Aufsess vacation rentals | Aufsess travel guide), whose idea it was to create an extensive collection that showcases the culture and art of the German nation. In this case the German nation is not only limited to the borders of modern Germany but all German—speaking cultures.
Today the aim of the Germanic National Museum is to collect, research and exhibit anything that documents the history, literature and art of the German—speaking world in the context of European culture as a whole. This covers everything from simple everyday objects to luxury items and fine art.
With more than 20,000 objects currently on display, the Germanic National Museum covers a huge spectrum, ranging from prehistory and early history through to the art and culture of the second half of the 20th century. Starting with a biface from the Stone Age, to medieval sculptures by Veit Stoss and Tilmann Riemenschneider and the Behaim globe, to Albrecht Dürer's emperor portraits as well as Rembrandt's self portrait, the museum takes its visitors on a fantastic journey through time. Additionally the museum covers articles of daily use, textiles, furniture, musical instruments, toys, weapons, hunting paraphernalia and scientific instruments from all ages.
